SBI Research suggested a target of 4.9% Fiscal Deficit in 2024.

India’s largest public sector bank, SBI, has suggested that the government should aim for a fiscal deficit target of 4.9% for the 2024-25 financial year. The report, led by Group Chief Economic Adviser Soumya Kanti Ghosh, emphasizes fiscal prudence and continued consolidation.

The report predicts strong growth in GST revenues and higher dividends from PSUs and the Reserve Bank of India. As the fiscal deficit decreases, government borrowing is expected to drop to around Rs 13.5 lakh crore in FY25 from Rs 14.1 lakh crore in the interim budget.

The government aims to reduce the fiscal deficit to below 4.5% of GDP by 2025-26. Fiscal deficit is the difference between the government’s total revenue and total expenditure.
