  • The Ministry of External Affairs has approved India Ports Global (IPGL) taking over operations of the Kaladan River port. IPGL, a joint venture between Deendayal Port Trust and Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust, was established in January 2015 under the Ministry of Shipping to develop overseas ports. Currently, IPGL manages container/multi-purpose terminals at Chabahar Port, Iran, and now aims to operate Sittwe Port, a part of the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project. This project aims to connect Kolkata’s port with Sittwe port in Myanmar via sea, further linking Sittwe to Paletwa in Myanmar through the Kaladan River and Paletwa to Zorinpui in Mizoram via road. This connection will offer an alternative route for goods to Northeastern states, cutting costs and distances from Kolkata to Mizoram. In May 2023, Myanmar’s Deputy Prime Minister Admiral Tin Aung San and India’s Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurated Sittwe Port and welcomed the first Indian cargo ship.
  • The Supreme Court stated that candidates running for elections aren’t required to disclose all movable properties they or their dependents own. Instead, they should disclose only properties of significant value or indicating a luxurious lifestyle. The court emphasized that voters don’t have an absolute right to know every detail about a candidate’s assets. It stressed the importance of distinguishing between substantial and insignificant matters when assessing the validity of a nomination. This ruling was made during a case involving Independent MLA Karikho Kri from Arunachal Pradesh. The court upheld Karikho Kri’s election from Tezu in the 2019 Arunachal Pradesh Assembly election. In response to a petition by Congress candidate Nuney Tayang challenging the 2019 Assembly election result, the High Court declared Tayang’s election null and void.
