Environment and Ecology

India is the world’s second-largest producer of nitrous oxide.

  • Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a powerful greenhouse gas that warms the atmosphere more than carbon dioxide. India is the second-largest emitter of N2O in the world, responsible for about 11% of global emissions in 2020, with China leading at 16%.
  • A study published in the journal Earth System Science Data on June 12 identifies fertilizer use as the main source of these emissions. The concentration of N2O in the atmosphere reached 336 parts per billion in 2022, which is about 25% higher than pre-industrial levels. In comparison, carbon dioxide levels were 417 parts per million in 2022, meaning there is a thousand times more CO2 than N2O in the atmosphere, making CO2 reduction a major focus for climate change efforts.
  • N2O emissions from human activities have increased by 40% over the last four decades, amounting to three million metric tonnes per year. The growth rate of these emissions between 2020 and 2022 is the highest since 1980.
  • In 2020, the top five emitters of man-made N2O were China (16.7%), India (10.9%), the United States (5.7%), Brazil (5.3%), and Russia (4.6%).
