Kozhikode in Kerala became India’s first UNESCO ‘City of Literature’.

On June 23, Kozhikode in northern Kerala, known for its rich cultural heritage, was declared India’s first UNESCO ‘City of Literature’.

In October 2023, Kozhikode was included in the ‘Literature’ category of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN), largely due to the effective efforts of the Kozhikode City Corporation. This achievement placed it ahead of culturally rich cities like Kolkata.

Gwalior and Kozhikode are among the 55 new cities that joined UCCN in 2023. Gwalior, in Madhya Pradesh, was recognized in the ‘Music’ category, while Kozhikode was recognized in the ‘Literature’ category.

The state government announced that starting next year, June 23 will be celebrated as ‘City of Literature’ day in Kozhikode, honoring literary figures like S K Pottakkad and Vaikom Muhammad Basheer. Special awards in six categories will be presented on this day.

Under the theme ‘Bringing Youth to the Table for the Next Decade’, the new creative cities are invited to the 2024 UCCN Annual Conference from July 1-5, 2024, in Braga, Portugal.

IISC created a device that makes infrared light visible.

Researchers at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) have created a device that changes infrared light to visible light. This process, called up-conversion, has many uses in defense and optical communications.

Since the human eye can only see visible light and not infrared light, this technology is significant. The IISc team used a 2D material to design a special mirror stack for this purpose. Their method involves sending an infrared signal and a pump beam onto the mirror stack. This approach successfully converted infrared light with a wavelength of about 1,550 nm to visible light at 622 nm.

The researchers plan to expand their work to convert light with longer wavelengths.
