  • On May 29, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) imposed a penalty of Rs 36.38 lakh on HSBC for violating the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA). The RBI stated that HSBC failed to meet the reporting requirements under FEMA’s Liberalised Remittance Scheme of 1999. HSBC received a show cause notice from the RBI and responded with a written reply and oral submissions. After reviewing the case and HSBC’s response, the RBI determined that the violations were proven and the penalty was warranted.
  • Every year on May 30th, Hindi Journalism Day (Hindi Patrakarita Diwas) is celebrated. This day honors the contributions of Hindi journalists who work for public welfare with truth and courage. On May 30, 1826, Pt. Jugal Kishore Shukla launched the first Hindi newspaper, “Udant Martand,” marking the start of Hindi journalism. Udant Martand was published in Calcutta. During British rule, the Hindi publication of Udant Martand was a significant milestone in Indian journalism history. The era of Udant Martand saw an increase in important publications and the number of journalists in the field.
  • The global unemployment rate is expected to decrease from 5.0% in 2023 to 4.9% in 2024.
  • In January, the ILO predicted that unemployment would stay at 5.2% due to rising unemployment in advanced economies.
  • The ILO revised its forecast to a lower rate because unemployment in China, India, and high-income countries was less than expected.
  • According to the ILO, the unemployment rate will stay at 4.9% in 2025.
  • The report stated that 183 million people are unemployed, and 402 million people want jobs but don’t have one.
  • In high-income countries, the unemployment rate is 9.7% for women and 7.3% for men.
  • The report estimated that 45.6% of working-age women will be employed in 2024.
  • The release of a comprehensive Master Circular on Health Insurance Products has repealed 55 previous circulars.
  • The Master Circular consolidates all policyholder entitlements for health insurance into one document.
  • Key norms from IRDAI include:
    • Insurers must offer more options to policyholders.
    • Every insurance document must include a Customer Information Sheet (CIS).
    • Customers should be free to choose riders, add-ons, and products based on their needs and medical conditions.
    • Policyholders with multiple health insurance policies can choose the one that provides the highest admissible claims.
    • Health insurance policies are renewable and cannot be refused solely based on past claims unless fraud, misinformation, or false representation is proven.
  • Insurers can reward policyholders with a no-claim bonus by either increasing the sum insured or discounting the premium.
  • If a policyholder cancels their insurance during the term, they will receive a refund for the remaining period.
  • New measures include:
    • Processing cashless authorisation requests within one hour.
    • Providing final authorisation within three hours of the hospital’s discharge request.
    • Paying Rs 5,000 per day to the policyholder if ombudsman awards are not implemented within 30 days.
