Fact Check India Today HASN’T released exit polls for 2024 election yet, these projections are FAKE

As the seventh and final phase of the ongoing Lok Sabha elections approaches, misinformation is circulating widely on social media. Two infographics purporting to show exit poll results conducted by India Today have been shared extensively. These graphics are fake. India Today has not released any exit poll data yet, and the official figures will only be broadcast after 6:30 PM on June 1.

The final phase of voting is scheduled for June 1, encompassing 57 constituencies, including all 13 seats in Punjab. As voters in Punjab prepare to cast their ballots, it’s crucial to be aware of the spread of false information.

False Exit Polls for Punjab Circulate on Social Media

The fake infographics suggest that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is leading in the Amritsar and Hoshiarpur Lok Sabha seats. According to these bogus projections, in Hoshiarpur, the BJP is claimed to have 31% of the votes, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) 29%, Congress 21%, and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) 12%. In Amritsar, the figures are allegedly 33% for BJP, 25% for AAP, 28% for Congress, and 10% for SAD.

These infographics bear the India Today logo and have misled many on social media. One Facebook user posted the alleged Amritsar exit poll with the caption, “Great news BJP winner Amritsar exit poll, Check voting percentage.”

India Today Confirms No Exit Polls Released Yet

India Today has confirmed that these infographics are fake and no exit poll data has been released by them. The actual exit poll figures will be available only after 6:30 PM on June 1. The Election Commission of India has restricted the broadcast of any exit poll data between 7 AM on April 19 and 6:30 PM on June 1 to ensure a fair electoral process.

Moreover, the viral infographics appear to mimic the design used by India Today’s Digital Intelligence Unit (DIU) during the 2022 Punjab assembly elections. However, India Today’s exit polls typically predict vote shares by state and overall national trends, not for specific Lok Sabha seats.

Context from Recent Surveys

In February 2024, India Today’s Mood Of The Nation survey forecasted that the Congress and AAP would each secure five seats in Punjab, with BJP winning two seats and SAD one seat. In the hotly contested seats of Amritsar and Hoshiarpur, prominent candidates include Congress’ sitting MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla, BJP’s Taranjit Singh Sandhu, AAP’s Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal, and BJP’s sitting MP Anita Som Parkash, among others.

Conclusion

It is essential for voters to be aware that the infographics circulating on social media are fabricated. India Today has not released any exit poll data for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections yet. The actual exit poll results will be broadcast only after the stipulated time on June 1. Stay informed and rely on verified sources for accurate election information.
