Cricket fans across India are mourning the untimely demise of former Indian pacer David Johnson. The 52-year-old cricketer tragically fell to his death from the fourth-floor balcony of his apartment in Kothanur on June 20. Johnson is survived by his wife and two children.

The incident has shocked the cricketing community and raised several questions. Johnson sustained severe injuries from the fall and was immediately rushed to a nearby private hospital. Unfortunately, he was declared “brought dead” upon arrival. The Kothanur Police, who quickly arrived at the scene, have initiated an investigation to determine whether Johnson’s fall was accidental or if he intentionally jumped. They have filed an unnatural death report as part of the ongoing investigation.

David Johnson hailed from Arasikere in the Hassan district of Karnataka. He was a notable bowler who played for Karnataka and made his international debut for India in 1996. Although his international career was brief, featuring in only two Test matches, Johnson left a mark in domestic cricket. He was also an active participant in the Karnataka Premier League tournament.

Renowned cricketer Anil Kumble, Johnson’s teammate and fellow Bengaluru native, expressed his grief on social media. “Saddened to hear the passing of my cricketing colleague David Johnson. Heartfelt condolences to his family. Gone too soon ‘Benny’!” Kumble posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.

A Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) official, speaking to PTI, confirmed the unfortunate incident, stating, “We were informed that he had fallen from the fourth floor of his apartment building. He was taken to a hospital but the doctors declared him brought dead.”

In his prime, Johnson was a key member of a formidable Karnataka bowling unit that included cricketing legends like Anil Kumble, Javagal Srinath, Venkatesh Prasad, and Dodda Ganesh. His contributions to the team were significant, and his presence on the field was highly regarded by teammates and opponents alike.

Dodda Ganesh, a former Indian pacer and Johnson’s long-time friend, shared his sorrow with PTI, recalling their early days. “It is shocking news as we had played together from our tennis cricket days for a club called Jai Karnataka. Later, we played together for the State and the country. That Karnataka bowling attack was the Indian bowling attack for a long time. In fact, six members from the State, including Rahul Dravid, were in the India squad at the same time. I doubt any other state has managed that feat,” Ganesh reminisced.

The cricketing community has been offering condolences, reflecting on Johnson’s legacy and his contributions to the sport. Jay Shah, the BCCI secretary, also extended his sympathies to Johnson’s family. “Deepest condolences to family and friends of our former Indian fast bowler David Johnson. His contributions to the game will always be remembered,” Mr. Shah wrote on X.

As the investigation continues, the cricketing world remembers David Johnson not only for his skills on the pitch but also for his camaraderie and the joy he brought to his teammates and fans. His sudden departure has left a void that will be deeply felt by all who knew him.
