PM Modi To Grant Certificates To 30K Krishi Sakhis At Varanasi

New Delhi, June 18: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to award certificates to over 30,000 self-help groups as Krishi Sakhis in Varanasi this Tuesday. This initiative is a significant stride in the government’s mission to empower rural women, as announced by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare.

Krishi Sakhis, integral to the government’s broader programme to create 3 crore ‘Lakhpati Didis‘, serve as agriculture para-extension workers. They are selected for their roles based on their status as trusted community resource persons and experienced farmers. Their strong ties to local farming communities ensure that they are respected and effective in their roles.

The Krishi Sakhi Convergence Programme (KSCP) aims to transform rural India by enhancing women’s skills through targeted training and certification. This initiative aligns with the ‘Lakhpati Didi’ programme’s objectives, focusing on increasing rural women’s income and self-sufficiency.

These women have undergone extensive training, encompassing 56 days of modules covering agroecological practices, from land preparation to harvest. Their training also includes organising farmer field schools and seed banks, maintaining soil health, integrated farming systems, and basic livestock management. This comprehensive training ensures that Krishi Sakhis are well-equipped to support their communities effectively.

On average, Krishi Sakhis can earn between Rs 60,000 to 80,000 annually, significantly contributing to their households and communities. The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare highlighted that these Krishi Sakhis are now undergoing refresher training with a special focus on Natural Farming and the Soil Health Card through DAY-NRLM agencies.

Post-training, Krishi Sakhis will take a proficiency test, and those who pass will be certified as Para-extension Workers. This certification will enable them to undertake various schemes under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare for a fixed resource fee.

This certification event marks a crucial step in recognizing and formalizing the role of women in agriculture, promoting sustainable farming practices, and strengthening rural economies. By empowering these women, the government is not only enhancing their skills and livelihoods but also paving the way for a more resilient and self-reliant rural India.
