  • The Navy rescued them from pirates after more than 12 hours of intense tactics.
    Indian naval teams are sanitizing and checking the fishing vessel before escorting it to a safe area for fishing.
    The Indian Navy rescued a hijacked fishing vessel from nine armed pirates.
    Pirates aboard a hijacked fishing vessel surrendered after the Indian Navy’s operation.
    The fishing vessel, with nine armed pirates, was about 90 nautical miles southwest of Socotra.
    The Socotra Archipelago is in the northwest Indian Ocean, near the Gulf of Aden.
    The Indian Navy has conducted anti-piracy and other maritime security operations for the past 100 days under ‘Op Sankalp’.
    During ‘Operation Sankalp’, the Navy saved 110 lives, including 45 Indians and 65 foreigners, as part of maritime security operations.
  • The Union Home Ministry extended the validity of FCRA-registered NGOs with licenses expiring on March 31 until June 30, providing relief to those with pending renewal applications. NGOs with validity expiring between April 1, 2024, and June 30, 2024, have until June 30 to apply for renewal. All NGOs receiving foreign contributions must be registered under the FCRA. As of July 17, 2023, there were 16,301 valid FCRA-registered NGOs in the country. The central government canceled the FCRA licenses of over 6,600 NGOs in the past five years for violations, totaling 20,693 cancellations in the last decade. According to Parliament data, 13,520 FCRA-registered NGOs received foreign contributions totaling Rs 55,741.51 crore in the financial years 2019-2020 to 2021-2022.
  • In the fiscal year 2023-24, Government e-Marketplace (GeM) doubled its Gross Merchandise Value (GMV). Currently, GeM has over 150,000 government buyers and 2.1 million sellers and service providers. It has integrated 89,421 panchayats and over 760 cooperatives into its procurement ecosystem. Around half of the total GMV, valued at ₹4 trillion, is due to service procurement. All Central government departments, along with their attached/subordinate offices, as well as Central and state autonomous bodies, public sector units, and local bodies, purchase products from this portal. Government e-marketplaces offer a wide range of products, from eggs and office supplies to vehicles and defense equipment. Launched on August 9, 2016, by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the primary goal is to establish an open and transparent procurement platform for government buyers.
  • UNESCO’s Executive Board added 18 new sites to the Global Geoparks network, bringing the total number of Geoparks to 213 across 48 countries. The new geoparks are located in Brazil, China, Croatia, Denmark, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Poland, Portugal, and Spain. Geoparks play a vital role in local communities by preserving significant geological heritage, engaging in public outreach, and promoting sustainable development. The UNESCO Global Geopark designation, established in 2015, acknowledges geological heritage of global importance. Additionally, New Zealand and the Philippines are joining the network as UNESCO Member States for the first time.
