Godrej & Boyce and Renmakch agree to work together to create a ‘Make-in-India’ supply chain for Indian Railways

Godrej & Boyce, the main company of the Godrej Group, said its business Godrej Tooling teamed up with Renmakch to work together on Machinery & Plant (M&P) projects for Railways and Metro Rail. They’ll provide high-quality equipment made in India. This partnership allows Godrej & Boyce to offer a full range of services from design to construction for Railways and to bid on bigger projects. They’ve been a reliable partner of the Indian Railways for more than 15 years.

Ishnu Barua is the new chairperson of the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission

Jishnu Barua is now the new chairperson of the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC). He was appointed on February 27, 2023. Before this role, Barua served as the chief secretary of Assam from October 2020 to August 2022, and prior to that, he was the additional chief secretary of Assam, overseeing various state departments from August 2017 to October 2020.

In February, India’s jobless rate increased to 7.45%, according to CMIE

In February 2023, joblessness, measured by the CMIE All India unemployment rate, stayed high at 7.45%, up from 7.14% in January. Urban unemployment dropped for the second month in a row to 7.93% from 8.55% in January and reached its highest point at 10.09% in December 2022. However, rural unemployment jumped to 7.23% in February from 6.48% in January, which is concerning.

SBI says they finished a $1 billion loan plan together with other lenders for social purposes

SBI recently finished a $1 billion social loan, marking it as the biggest ESG loan among commercial banks in Asia Pacific and second-largest worldwide. The loan was set up with the help of MLABs, MUFG bank, and Taipei Fubon Commercial Bank Co. Ltd. MUFG and Taipei Fubon Commercial Bank are coordinating the social loan together, with MUFG taking the lead.

RBI starts two surveys to collect helpful information for monetary policy

On March 3rd, the Reserve Bank of India introduced two important surveys. These surveys help the bank make decisions about its monetary policy every two months. One survey focuses on finding out what households expect regarding inflation, while the other measures consumer confidence. The Inflation Expectations Survey of Households (IESH) for March 2023 aims to understand what people think about price changes and inflation based on what they buy, covering 19 cities.

Rashmi Shukla, a senior officer in the Indian Police Service (IPS), has been named as the Director-General of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), which guards the borders with Nepal and Bhutan. Shukla, who joined the IPS in 1988, previously worked with the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). She was in charge of the State Intelligence Department in Maharashtra Police, where there were allegations of phone tapping involving politicians in 2019.

The Supreme Court asked for an experts committee, led by a retired Supreme Court judge named AM Sapre, to be formed. This came after several PILs were filed regarding the recent drop in Adani Group shares, which happened because of claims by a US-based short-seller, Hindenburg Research, about fraud. At the same time, the Supreme Court instructed the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) to complete its investigation into the Adani Group-Hindenburg situation within two months.

Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal opened the first B2B Global Conference & Expo on Traditional Medicine organized under the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in Guwahati. He mentioned India’s efficient utilization of natural resources like Ayurveda to provide healthcare and work towards Universal Health Coverage. The establishment of the Global Center for Traditional Medicine by the World Health Organization (WHO-GCTM) in Jamnagar, supported by India, will assist member countries in enhancing education and practices in Traditional Medicine.

D Gukesh receives Player of the Year award from the Asian Chess Federation

Indian chess player D Gukesh won the Player-of-the-Year award from the Asian Chess Federation. He got it for winning the gold medal in the 44th Chess Olympiad in Mahabalipuram with a remarkable score of 9/11. Gukesh is also one of the few Indians to achieve a rating above 2700, making him the youngest Grandmaster from India to reach this milestone.

NADA banned India’s triple-jumper Aishwarya Babu for four years

Along with another athlete, S Dhanalakshmi, they tested positive for this prohibited substance listed by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). Jeswin Aldrin sets new record at AFI National Jumps Competition

Tamil Nadu’s Jeswin Aldrin, aged 21, broke the national record for men’s long jump at the second AFI National Jumps Competition. He jumped 8.42 meters, surpassing the previous record of 8.36 meters set by his fellow Indian athlete M Sreeshankar in April 2022. Earlier, Aldrin won silver at the Asian Indoor Championships in Astana with a jump of 7.97 meters. His competitive spirit helped him break the national record.

Edited by Indian poet-diplomat Abhay Kumar and published by HarperCollins, the book features a collection of short stories and poems spanning 2600 years, translated into English from various languages including Angika, Bajjika, Bhojpuri, Magahi, Maithili, Hindi, Urdu, Pali, Sanskrit, and Farsi.
