National

  • President Draupadi Murmu chose Satnam Singh Sandhu to be a member of the Rajya Sabha, which is the upper part of Parliament. Satnam Singh Sandhu started the Chandigarh Group of Colleges (CGC) in Mohali in 2001. Then, in 2012, he started Chandigarh University.
  • The Indian government has officially declared Surat Airport in Gujarat as an international airport.
  • Vijay, the Tamil actor, said he’s starting a new political party called ‘Tamilga Vetri Kazhagam’.
  • The Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, said in the budget speech for 2024-25 that girls aged 9-14 will get a free vaccine to prevent cervical cancer.
  • India and Oman agreed to work together on defense.
  • NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL) and the Maharashtra government agreed to work together for the next five years. They’ll be investing around ₹80,000 crore to develop one million tonnes of green hydrogen and related products like green ammonia and green methanol.
  • AYUSH Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma started building the first Yoga and Naturopathy Hospital in the North East. They laid the foundation stone for this 100-bed hospital in Dibrugarh, Assam, which will cover about 15 acres and cost around Rs 100 crore.

Economics

In the latest budget, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman shared a plan to make Indian Railways better. The government wants to create three main routes under the PM Gati Shakti plan.

  • Energy, Mineral, and Cement Routes: Make it easier to move important stuff like resources.
  • Port Connectivity Routes: Improve connections to big ports for smoother transportation.
  • High Traffic Density Routes: Reduce traffic and make things work better.

Technology

The Karnataka government wants to make online gaming better by reducing its bad effects. They’re starting a digital detox plan to encourage responsible gaming.

Sports

  • Udayanidhi Stalin, who is in charge of sports and youth welfare, recently shared some exciting news. They’re launching the ‘Kalaigner Sports Kit’ program to celebrate Karunanidhi’s 100th birthday. This initiative plans to give sports equipment to 12,000 Gram Panchayats. The program kicks off on February 7 in Tiruchi, Tamil Nadu, with the goal of helping young athletes.
  • Aryna Sabalenka from Belarus won the Women’s Singles title at the 2024 Australian Open. She beat China’s Zheng Qinwen with scores of 6-3, 6-2, securing her second Grand Slam win in a row. Sabalenka is the first woman since Victoria Azarenka in 2012 and 2013 to win the Australian Open two times in a row.
  • Abhinav Bindra will carry the Olympic torch at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The torch relay will happen from April 16 to July 26, covering 65 areas, including five overseas territories. Around 10,000 people will join the Olympic Torch Relay, and 1,000 will be part of the Paralympic Torch Relay. Abhinav Bindra, the first Indian to win an individual gold medal at the Olympics, achieved this in the men’s 10m air rifle event at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The Paris Olympics are scheduled from July 26 to August 11.

Defence

  • The US recently agreed to sell 31 Predator drones to India. This deal, worth around US$3.99 billion, was approved on February 1, following an announcement during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the US in June 2023.
  • Under the agreement, India will receive 31 High Altitude Long Endurance (HALE) UAVs. The Navy will get 15 SeaGuardian drones, while the Army and Indian Air Force will each receive eight SkyGuardians for land operations.
  • In addition to the drones, the deal includes 170 AGM-114R Hellfire missiles, 310 GBU-39B/B laser small-diameter bombs, and 161 embedded global positioning and inertial navigation systems.
  • The MQ-9B Predator drone, a variant of the MQ-9 “Reaper,” is developed by General Atomics Aeronautical Systems (GAAS). Currently, the Indian Navy operates two MQ-9 drones leased from the US since November 2020.
  • These drones are designed for high-altitude and long-endurance flights, capable of flying over 40,000 feet. They serve as reliable platforms for extended monitoring missions, with a maximum endurance of 40 hours.

Biotechnology and Disease

  • In 2022, there were 1.41 million new cases of cancer reported in India. The World Health Organization shared this information on February 1, 2024.
  • Globally, there has been an increase of 20 million new cancer cases.
  • In India, out of the 1.41 million cases, 691,178 were in men, and 722,138 were in women.
  • The most common type of cancer in India was breast cancer, with 192,020 new cases, making up 13.6% of all cases. Other common types included lip and oral cavity, cervix and uterine, lung, and esophageal cancers.
  • Worldwide, lung cancer had the highest number of new cases at 2.5 million. Female breast cancer and colorectal cancer were the next most common.
  • In 2022, 9.7 million people globally died from cancer, with 916,827 of those deaths occurring in India.
  • India accounted for 40% of global deaths from cervical cancer.
  • It is predicted that by 2050, countries with the highest Human Development Index (HDI) will see an additional 4.8 million new cancer cases.

Awards

  • Jay Shah has been chosen as the President of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) for the third time in a row.
  • Anil Kumar Lahoti, who used to lead the Railway Board, is now the new chairman of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) after PD Vaghela left the position.
  • Lal Krishna Advani, a prominent member of the BJP, will be honored with the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award. Prime Minister Narendra Modi made the announcement on February 3, praising Advani’s long and dedicated service to the public with a strong commitment to transparency and integrity in politics. The award will be given within a year of the consecration of the Ram temple, marking a significant moment for the BJP. Advani, who played a key role in the ‘Ram Rath Yatra’ in 1990, has served as Deputy Prime Minister and held various ministerial positions in the government of Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He was a member of Parliament from 1970 to 2019. Additionally, the government had previously nominated the late Karpoori Thakur, a socialist leader and former Bihar chief minister, for the Bharat Ratna last month.

Other

  • Hindutva group members recently broke rules at the protected Martand Surya temple near Anantnag in Kashmir. This ancient temple, built in the 8th century by King Lalitaditya Muktapida, has a mix of different architectural styles, including Kashmiri, Gupta, Chinese, Gandhara, Roman, and Greek.
