  • India’s first domestically made semiconductor chips are slated for production at Micron Technology’s packaging unit in Sanand, Gujarat, by mid-2025. These chips are expected to primarily target international markets, potentially elevating the facility’s prominence in the global semiconductor industry. They will serve various purposes, including powering data centers, smartphones, notebooks, and Internet of Things (IoT) devices. The distribution of chips will be decided closer to production, considering factors like demand, pricing, and customer needs. Micron is exploring opportunities in emerging sectors, such as securing government contracts specific to India and supplying chips for electric two-wheelers. Additionally, as Micron expands its semiconductor supply chain in India, key suppliers like Simmtech are establishing operations in Gujarat. Micron’s setup in India aligns with the government’s $10 billion incentive program for semiconductor manufacturing and assembly, involving the establishment of an assembly, testing, monitoring, and packaging (ATMP) plant.
