  • BEML and BEL signed an MoU to jointly develop an indigenous Train Control Management System (i-TCMS), aiming to revolutionize rail communication technology in India. Their main goal is to collaborate on high-value products and solutions for Indian Railways and Metro systems. This partnership intends to reduce dependency on imported technology and aligns with the “Make in India” initiative to develop TCMS domestically for future rail projects.
  • India aims to halt urea imports by the end of 2025, as new fertilizer plants boost local production. Currently, India imports about 30% of its 35 million tonnes annual urea requirement. Urea production in the country rose from 225.08 lakh tonnes in 2014-15 to 284.95 lakh tonnes in 2022-23. In the same period, urea imports totaled 75.8 lakh tonnes, approximately 30% of domestic demand, sourced mainly from Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.
  • In the fiscal year 2023-24, Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port (Kolkata), which includes Kolkata Dock System (KDS) and Haldia Dock Complex (HDC), handled 66.4 million tonnes of cargo, marking a 1.11% increase from the previous year’s record of 65.66 million tonnes.
  • HDC handled 49.54 million tonnes of cargo in 2023-24, surpassing its previous record of 48.608 million tonnes in 2022-23 by 1.91%. Kolkata Dock System managed 16.856 million tonnes of cargo in 2023-24 compared to 17.052 million tonnes in 2022-23.
  • The port achieved a net surplus of Rs 501.73 crores in 2023-24, marking a significant 65% growth over the previous year’s net surplus of Rs 304.07 crores.
  • HDC saw growth in various cargo categories such as POL (Product), Other Liquid, Vegetable Oil, Iron Ore, Other Coal Coke, Finished Fertilizer, and Container TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent). Kolkata Dock System witnessed growth in finished fertilizer, timber, other coal/coke, pulses and peas, container (both TEUs and tonnage) during 2023-24 compared to 2022-23.
