1. The Indian Navy appointed its first female helicopter pilot.
- Sub Lieutenant Anamika B. Rajeev became the first woman helicopter pilot in the Indian Navy during the Passing Out Parade at Naval Air Station INS Rajali in Arakkonam, Ranipet district.
- Vice Admiral Rajesh Pendharkar, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Naval Command, awarded the prestigious “Golden Wings” to 21 officers.
- The Passing Out Parade on 7 June celebrated the graduation of the 102nd Helicopter Conversion Course.
- The trainees completed an intensive 22-week program with rigorous flying and ground training at Indian Naval Air Squadron 561.
- The Helicopter Training School in Arakkonam has trained 849 pilots from the Indian Coast Guard, Indian Navy, and friendly foreign countries.

2. On June 9, Magnus Carlsen won the Norway Chess 2024 tournament with 17.5 points.
Magnus Carlsen defeated Fabiano Caruana with 17.5 points using the white pieces in Armageddon. Hikaru Nakamura finished second with 15.5 points, and Chennai’s Praggnanandhaa was third with 14.5 points. In the women’s category, Ju Wenjun won the Norway Chess title with 19 points, while Anna Muzychuk finished second with 16 points. The annual Norway Chess tournament is typically held from May to June. The inaugural event took place from May 7 to May 18 in the Stavanger region of Norway.
National Appointments
3. Prem Singh Tamang has been sworn in as Sikkim’s Chief Minister for a second term.
Prem Singh Tamang, the leader of Sikkim Krantikari Morcha, was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Sikkim. Governor Lakshman Acharya administered the oath to Tamang and his Council of Ministers at Paljor Stadium in Gangtok. The council has 12 members, including the Chief Minister. In the recent elections, Sikkim Krantikari Morcha won 31 out of 32 seats, while the opposition Sikkim Democratic Front, which had ruled for 25 years, secured only one seat.
The Chief Minister is the elected head of the State Government and serves as the link between the Governor and the Council of Ministers. According to Article 163, the Council of Ministers, led by the Chief Minister, assists and advises the Governor. The Chief Minister holds the real executive powers in the state.

4. The Haryana government will set up a special NRI cell.
During the Videsh Sampark Programme, Haryana Chief Secretary Sanjeev Kaushal announced the creation of NRI cells to address grievances of Haryana natives abroad and protect their interests. The program aims to strengthen connections with the diaspora and collaborate with state governments. Additionally, the state is holding seminars in universities and colleges to inform youth about higher education and job opportunities overseas.
