  • The Central Government has permitted the export of 14,000 tonnes of non-Basmati white rice to Mauritius, as stated in an official notice. This comes after a ban on such exports in July 2023 to manage domestic prices and ensure food security within the country. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade announced that the export will be facilitated through National Cooperative Exports Limited.
  • Previously, India had allowed the export of non-Basmati white rice to various countries including Nepal, Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire, Republic of Guinea, Malaysia, Philippines, Seychelles, UAE, Singapore, Comoros, etc., albeit in different amounts. Further exports will be permitted to meet the food security requirements of other countries, subject to government approval and upon request.
  • Benin, a West African nation, stands out as one of the significant importers of non-Basmati rice from India.
  • Keki Mistry was approved as Chairman of HDFC Life by IRDAI on May 7. He took over after Deepak S. Parekh’s resignation as chairman and non-executive director in April. Mistry, formerly vice chairman and CEO of HDFC Limited, became a non-executive director of HDFC Bank Limited following the amalgamation of HDFC Limited with HDFC Bank. He also serves on SEBI’s Primary Market Advisory Committee. HDFC Life, headquartered in Mumbai, is led by MD and CEO Vibha Padalkar.
  • On May 8, Google introduced a new app called “Google Wallet” for Android users in India. This app lets users securely store personal info like loyalty cards, IDs, and more. Google assured that the launch of Google Wallet won’t affect its existing UPI app, Google Pay. Initially, Google partnered with over 20 brands including PVR & INOX, Air India, Indigo, Flipkart, Pine Labs, Kochi Metro, and Abhibus for the rollout. While Google Wallet globally supports credit and debit cards, the Indian version won’t.
  • Every year on May 11th, India celebrates National Technology Day. This year’s theme, in 2024, is “From Schools to Startups: Inspiring Young Minds to Innovate.” The day marks the historic Pokhran nuclear tests conducted by the Indian Army in Rajasthan on May 11, 1998. Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee declared it National Technology Day to honor these tests. The first National Technology Day event was organized by the Council for Technology on May 11, 1999.
