  • Each year on April 12, we celebrate the International Day of Human Space Flight, marking the beginning of space exploration for humanity and recognizing the advancements made in space science and technology. The theme for the 2024 International Day of Human Space Flight is ‘Encourage Scientific Curiosity’. The United Nations General Assembly declared April 12 as the International Day of Human Space Flight in April 2011. Yuri Gagarin, a Soviet citizen, made the first human space flight on April 12, 1961. The launch of Sputnik I, the first man-made Earth satellite, occurred on October 4, 1957. Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman to orbit the Earth on June 16, 1963. Neil Armstrong made history on July 20, 1969, by becoming the first person to walk on the Moon’s surface. The “Magna Carta of Space” went into effect on October 10, 1967.
  • Lindy Cameron, the ex-CEO of the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre, will become Britain’s first female High Commissioner to India, succeeding Mr. Alex Ellis CMG, who is moving to another Diplomatic Service role as Britain’s next ambassador to Spain. Cameron will assume her new role in April 2024. Her appointment coincides with growing cooperation between the two countries, with India ranking as Britain’s 12th largest trading partner. Trade between them has been rising, and negotiations for a free trade agreement are underway, possibly to be finalized in 2024.
  • The updated agreement includes the Principal Purpose Test (PPT), designed to prevent tax avoidance by ensuring treaty benefits are only given for genuine transactions. This change applies to various types of income like capital gains, dividends, and technical service fees. The PPT determines if foreign investors can claim treaty benefits. Article 27B in the treaty defines ‘entitlement to benefits.’ The India-Mauritius treaty was amended on March 7 in Port Louis. FPI investment from Mauritius was Rs 3.25 lakh crore, decreasing to Rs 4.19 lakh crore by March 2024. In 2016, India and Mauritius revised their tax agreement, allowing India to tax capital gains on shares traded through Mauritius.
  • The US-India Tax Forum, an initiative of the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF), was launched on February 25, 2020, as a non-profit entity. Tarun Bajaj, former Revenue Secretary and Secretary of Economic Affairs to the Government of India, joined USISPF as a Board Advisor in January 2024. The forum aims to foster a robust partnership between India and the US specifically focused on tax policy development. Tarun Bajaj, belonging to the 1988 batch of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) from the Haryana Cadre, brings his expertise to this initiative.
