  • She’s the Director of Global Health at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which is widely recognized for its global health efforts. The Gairdner Foundation in Canada grants the John Dirks Award for global health, and she’s the first Indian woman to win it. Dr. Kang has focused her work on various studies, including childhood diarrheal disease and vaccines. She’s also the first Indian woman to be elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. Established in 1958 with a donation from philanthropist James A Gairdner, the Toronto-based Gairdner Foundation is known for awarding Canada’s most prestigious biomedical science research prize.
  • Every year on April 13th, we remember the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre, a dark event from India’s colonial history. It happened 105 years ago but is still vivid in our minds. On that day in 1919, unarmed Indians were killed in Jallianwala Bagh, Amritsar. The violence erupted after the arrest of two nationalist leaders, Saifuddin Kichlu and Dr. Satyapal, who were protesting. Martial law was imposed to quell further protests. On April 13, 1919, during Baisakhi, a large crowd gathered in Jallianwala Bagh, unaware of the martial law. Brigadier General Dyer and his men arrived, blocked the only exit, and opened fire on the unarmed crowd, killing over 1000 men, women, and children. Following the massacre, the government established the Hunter Commission to investigate the incident.
  • Russia successfully launched its Angara-A5 rocket from the Vostochny Cosmodrome in the Far East after overcoming technical issues that caused two previous attempts to be canceled. The Angara-A5 is built to transport heavy payloads into low Earth orbit, capable of carrying over 20 tonnes. Russia’s space program has faced notable challenges in recent years, and the Angara rockets are intended to replace the older Proton models.
  • Sanjay Shukla from Centrum Housing Finance is now the Managing Director of the National Housing Bank (NHB). The Financial Services Institutions Bureau examined 16 candidates for this position. Shukla’s appointment is notable as NHB intends to raise capital by issuing bonds worth ₹3,000 crore with a three-year maturity. Additionally, the FSIB proposed Manoj Mittal, the Managing Director of IFCI, as the Chairman of SIDBI.
