  • Thick Ash Clouds: Indonesia’s volcanology agency reported thick layers of brown ash flying several kilometers into the sky.
  • Eruption Details: The volcano erupted for about five minutes, spewing ash up to 5 km (3.1 mi) high.
  • Recent Activity: A smaller eruption was recorded on May 10.
  • Alert Status: The volcano’s alert status remains at the second highest level.
  • Volcanic Activity in Indonesia: Home to about 127 active volcanoes, Indonesia is situated on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” where continental plates meet, causing significant volcanic and seismic activity.
  • Previous Eruption Incident: Last year, Marapi Volcano in Sumatra erupted, killing more than 20 people and releasing a gray cloud of ash up to 3 km high.
  • Renowned Punjabi poet and Padma Shri recipient Surjit Patar passed away on May 11 in Ludhiana, Punjab.   • Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) is set to install Chhattisgarh’s first 15-megawatt (MW) floating solar project in its Maroda-1 reservoir. This initiative aims to enhance BSP’s carbon footprint by significantly reducing CO2 emissions. The new solar plant will generate approximately 34.26 million units of electricity annually, cutting BSP’s carbon emissions by 28,330 tonnes each year. The tender process is complete, and the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract will be awarded soon. The Maroda reservoir, spanning 2.1 square kilometers with a water storage capacity of 19 cubic millimeters (MM3), will host this groundbreaking project.
