  • Higher interest rates and improved customer relationships contributed to its growth. However, public sector banks’ portion of total deposits has decreased to 59%, down from 66% in 2017-18 according to RBI data. Private sector banks have experienced faster deposit growth compared to public sector banks. Private sector bank deposits surged by 135% to Rs 68.4 trillion by December 2023 from Rs 29 trillion in March 2018, while public sector bank deposits increased by 40% to Rs 116.5 trillion from Rs 76.5 trillion in the same period. Private sector banks have also enhanced banking transactions through technology, making them more convenient.
  • PM Modi inaugurated a portal at an event hosted by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. He was the chief guest. The Ministry initiated a nationwide effort to provide credit support to marginalized groups. The portal assisted 100,000 entrepreneurs from disadvantaged communities. As part of the National Action for Mechanized Sanitation Ecosystem (NAMASTE), the ministry distributed Ayushman health cards and personal protective equipment (PPE) kits to sewer and septic tank workers (Safai Mitras). The Ayushman health card is issued under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY), a government-sponsored health insurance scheme in India. It contains essential beneficiary information, including a unique identification number and details of covered healthcare services.
  • The committee, led by former President Ram Nath Kovind, submitted its report on ‘One Nation, One Election’ to the President on March 14. They proposed holding elections for panchayats, assemblies, and Parliament simultaneously in three tiers. According to the panel, Lok Sabha and State Assembly elections should be held together, followed by municipality and panchayat polls within 100 days. The extensive 18,626-page report resulted from consultations with stakeholders, experts, and research conducted over 191 days. Simultaneous polls, as per the report, would enhance the development process and social cohesion, strengthening democracy. The panel suggested creating a common electoral roll and voter ID cards by the Election Commission of India in collaboration with state election authorities. Additionally, amendments to five articles of the constitution were recommended for simultaneous polls. In the event of a Hung House, the committee proposed either a no-confidence motion or a fresh election for the new Lok Sabha or state Assembly for the remaining term. The committee on ‘One Nation, One Election’ was formed on September 2, 2023, comprising members such as Ghulam Nabi Azad, Amit Shah, N.K. Singh, Subhash Kashyap, Sanjay Kothari, and Harish Salve, with Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal serving as a Special Invitee.
  • Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Gyanesh Kumar were chosen as new election commissioners by a committee led by PM Modi. The committee included PM Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury from the Indian National Congress in Lok Sabha. Other candidates shortlisted for the position were Utpal Kumar Singh, Pradeep Kumar Tripathi, Gyanesh Kumar, Indevar Pandey, Sukhbir Singh Sandhu, and Sudhir Kumar Gangadhar Rahate. These appointments followed the resignation of Arun Goyal on March 10 and the retirement of Anup Chandra Pandey on February 15. The president appoints election commissioners based on the committee’s recommendation, chaired by the Prime Minister.
