  • On May 6, Indian football legend Sunil Chhetri will retire from international football after the FIFA World Cup qualifier against Kuwait.
  • Chhetri’s career, spanning two decades, has made him a key figure in Indian football. He played 145 matches for the national team and scored 94 goals. He was crucial in India’s victories in the SAFF Championship (2011, 2015, 2021) and the Nehru Cup (2007, 2009, 2012). Notably, he led India to win the 2008 AFC Challenge Cup, qualifying them for their first AFC Asian Cup in 27 years.
  • Chhetri began his professional career at Mohun Bagan in 2002. He holds the record for the most caps and goals in Indian national team history and is the third-highest goalscorer in international competition among active players, behind Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
  • Chhetri received the Padma Shri award in 2019, India’s fourth-highest civilian honor, and the Arjuna Award in 2011 for his athletic achievements. In 2021, he became the first football player to win India’s top sporting honor, the Khel Ratna Award.
  • On May 15, Slovakia’s four-time Prime Minister Robert Fico was injured in a shooting incident in Handelova and was hospitalized. The shooting happened outside the House of Culture in the mining town of Handelova, in the Trencin region, right after a government meeting.
  • Robert Fico, a leftist leader, was appointed as Slovakia’s prime minister for the fourth time in October 2023. He previously served as prime minister from 2006 to 2010 and from 2012 to 2018.
  • Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla gave the first citizenship certificates to 14 applicants.
    A committee led by the Director of Census Operations in Delhi approved their citizenship after careful review.
  • The government announced new Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2024, on March 11.
    These rules outline how applications are processed by District Level Committees and reviewed and granted by State Level Empowered Committees.
  • Only people from Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Buddhist, Parsi, and Christian communities from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan who entered India by December 31, 2014, are eligible for citizenship.
    The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill was signed into law on December 12, 2019.
  • A series of events were organized in Mumbai to celebrate the 250th Foundation Day of Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd. Highlights included the inauguration of newly acquired land from the Mumbai Port Authority (MPA) and the launch of a prototype indigenous midget submarine. Additionally, a commemorative coin was released by the RBI to mark the occasion. A Solar Electric Hybrid boat and a Fuel Cell Electric Ferry were also commissioned. Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited began with a small dry dock in 1774 and was incorporated in 1934. It has been under the Government of India since 1960.
