  • The Finance Ministry has proposed strict measures to protect citizens from cyber fraud, particularly after the Bank of Baroda World App scam. These efforts are part of a broader national initiative to fight cybercrime. In 2023 alone, over 1.1 million cyber fraud cases amounting to Rs 7,488.63 crore ($8.9 billion) were reported by India’s National Crime Records Bureau. To address this issue, the Home Ministry established the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Center (I4C), which coordinates efforts nationwide. The ministry is urging for stricter Know Your Customer (KYC) processes and enhanced due diligence by banks and financial institutions when onboarding new merchants. Additionally, there’s a push for improved data security and protection practices at both the merchant and BC levels. In October 2023, the RBI barred the state-owned Bank of Baroda from adding new customers to its mobile app ‘BoB World’ due to significant supervisory concerns.
