  • The World Health Organization (WHO) has approved Takeda Pharmaceuticals’ dengue vaccine, TAK-003. This vaccine contains weakened forms of four types of the dengue virus, helping the body build immunity without causing illness. WHO approval means the vaccine has been evaluated for quality, safety, and effectiveness.
  • TAK-003 is for children aged 6 to 16, who are at higher risk of dengue. WHO recommends the vaccine be given in two doses, three months apart. Previously, WHO had approved another dengue vaccine, CYD-TDV, made by Sanofi Pasteur.
  • Dengue is a dangerous disease spread by infected mosquitoes. Around 3.8 billion people in Asia, Africa, and the Americas are at risk, with 100 to 400 million cases reported each year.
  • National Endangered Species Day is celebrated every year on the third Friday of May. This year, it falls on May 17. The day aims to raise awareness about protecting endangered species.
  • The theme for National Endangered Species Day 2024 is “Celebrate Saving Species.” The Endangered Species Coalition and David Robinson started this day in 2006 to encourage people worldwide to learn about and help endangered animals.
  • This day also highlights the current status of endangered animals and how climate change affects their habitats.
  • An endangered species is one that is at risk of extinction. The main causes of extinction are habitat loss and loss of genetic diversity.
  • In India, some endangered species include the Asiatic Lion, Bengal Tiger, Snow Leopard, Kashmiri Red Stag, and One-Horned Rhinoceros.
  • The UAE has introduced the 10-year Blue Residency Visa to attract global leaders in environmental research, activism, and technology. This visa offers long-term residency to individuals contributing to environmental protection and sustainability.

  • Senior advocate Kapil Sibal has been elected president of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) for the fourth time. Sibal won with 1,066 votes, defeating his closest rival, senior advocate Pradeep Rai. Other candidates included Priya Hingorani, Tripurari Ray, and Neeraj Srivastava. Advocate Vikrant Yadav was elected as the SCBA secretary. Sibal, a senior advocate since 1983, previously served as the additional solicitor general of India in 1989-90. The Supreme Court has also mandated reserving some executive committee positions in the SCBA for women.
