Jyotiraditya Scindia will open India Steel 2023 in Mumbai.

India Steel 2023 is set to open on April 19th at the Mumbai Exhibition Centre in Goregaon, Mumbai. The event will be chaired by Union Minister of Steel Jyotiraditya Scindia. It’s organized by the Union Ministry of Steel, along with the Department of Commerce, Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry, and FICCI.

Dr. Jitendra Singh launches ‘YUVA PORTAL’.

Dr. Jitendra Singh, the Science and Technology Minister, unveiled the YUVA PORTAL in New Delhi to link and spot promising young StartUps. He also announced the One Week – One Lab initiative. Dr. Singh stressed the need for active involvement of various stakeholders, especially from the industry, to ensure the lasting success of Start-Ups.

The Mangrove Pitta bird is located in Odisha.

Forest officials in Odisha’s Bhitarkanika have conducted the country’s first-ever census of mangrove pitta birds. They spotted 179 of these colorful birds, which are unique to the mangrove forests of Bhitarkanika in Odisha and Sundarban in West Bengal. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has classified the species as “Near Threatened”.

Cumbum grapes from Tamil Nadu receive GI tag.

Recently, the renowned Cumbum Panneer Thratchai, also known as Cumbum grapes from Tamil Nadu, received the Geographical Indication (GI) tag. The Cumbum valley in Tamil Nadu, often called the ‘Grapes City of South India,’ is famous for growing the Panneer Thratchai or Muscat Hamburg variety, which makes up about 85% of the grape cultivation in Tamil Nadu.

Tata Electronics names Randhir Thakur as CEO and MD.

Tata Group has named Dr. Randhir Thakur as the CEO and managing director of Tata Electronics Pvt Ltd (TEPL) as part of its strategy to enhance semiconductor manufacturing capabilities and compete more effectively in India’s precision machining industry. Thakur, previously with Intel, where he held the position of president of Intel Foundry Services, brings extensive manufacturing experience to his new role at TEPL.

Awards

Germany’s highest honor bestowed upon Angela Merkel.

Angela Merkel, the former Chancellor of Germany, was awarded the country’s highest Order of Merit. President Frank-Walter Steinmeier presented her with the Grand Cross award, an honor previously bestowed only twice to former chancellors Konrad Adenauer and Helmut Kohl. All three leaders are from the conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU).

Utsa Patnaik won the Malcolm Adiseshiah Award in 2023.

Utsa Patnaik, a renowned economist recognized both nationally and internationally, has been selected for the esteemed Malcolm Adiseshiah Award 2023. This award, given annually by the Malcolm & Elizabeth Adiseshiah Trust, honors exceptional social scientists chosen by a national-level jury from submitted nominations. The recipient will be awarded a citation and a cash prize of ₹2 lakh at a ceremony in Chennai, the date of which will be announced shortly by the Trust. In 2022, the award was bestowed upon the Indian economist Prabhat Patnaik.

Schemes and Committees

Eight projects valued at Rs 638 crores approved for Namami Gange initiative.

The Executive Committee of the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG), led by Director General G Asok Kumar, endorsed eight projects totaling approximately Rs 638 crore. These projects target pollution reduction in River Hindon, a tributary of River Yamuna. In the Shamli district, four projects under the ‘Hindon Rejuvenation Plan’ were approved, with a total cost of Rs 407.39 crore. Their aim is to halt the flow of contaminated water into the Krishni River. This decision came during the 48th meeting of the NMCG Executive Committee.

The Tribal Affairs Minister initiated a plan for marketing and logistics development for the PTP-NER scheme.

Arjun Munda, the Minister of Tribal Affairs, will introduce the PTP-NER scheme in Manipur. This scheme aims to help Scheduled Tribes in the North-Eastern Region by improving how tribal products are bought, transported, and sold.

Chebet and Obiri dominate the Boston Marathon, representing Kenya.

Kenya’s Evans Chebet won the professional Men’s Division in the 127th Boston Marathon, with a time of 2 hours, 5 minutes, and 54 seconds. Hellen Obiri also won the women’s race. Chebet’s training partner, Benson Kipruto, came third.

Harmanpreet Kaur and Suryakumar Yadav were named Wisden’s T20I players of 2022.

Suryakumar Yadav and Harmanpreet Kaur received prestigious awards from Wisden Almanack. Suryakumar was named the top T20I cricketer, while Harmanpreet became the first Indian woman to win the Cricketer of the Year award.

Business Talks Between India and Russia in 2023.

On April 17th, the first “India-Russia Business Dialogue” of 2023 happened in New Delhi, with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Russian Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov in attendance. Majumdar conceived and curated the book, featuring a special note on the back cover by Gulzar. It’s set for official release on Tendulkar’s 50th birthday, April 24, 2023. The book chronicles Tendulkar’s journey, beginning with his teenage debut and the notable incident in Pakistan in 1989 when he gained global recognition after a bloody nose. It also emphasizes his rise as a batting sensation, transcending sporting boundaries.
