Some lines of current affairs 19 May 2024 news

  • By the end of May or early June, the Army will receive another set of Russian Igla-S very short range air defense systems (VSHORAD). These systems fill a crucial gap in air defense but have faced repeated delivery delays. The payment issues between India and Russia, which had stalled defense deals and crucial payments, have been resolved.
  • In June, the Army will also receive the first of two Israeli Hermes-900 Medium Altitude Long Endurance unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), assembled by ADSTL in Hyderabad.
  • The Igla-S system was contracted in 2023 under the fourth tranche of Emergency Procurement (EP). With technology transferred from Rosoboronexport, the Igla-S systems are being assembled in India by Adani Defense Systems and Technologies Limited (ADSTL). The contract, worth ₹260 crores, includes 48 Igla-S launchers, 100 missiles, 48 night sights, and a missile testing station.
  • On May 17, to mark the 250th birth anniversary of mystic saint and scholar Fakir Lalan Shah, the nine-day Indo-Bangla Baul Music Festival started in Dhaka. The event is organized by Lalan Biswas Sangh, a cultural and research organization dedicated to promoting Lalan Fakir’s work. Lalan is highly regarded as a mystic saint, philosopher, and social reformer. He is the most prominent figure in the Baul tradition of Bangladesh and India. Born in 1774 in Horishpur, Jhenaidah district, modern Bangladesh, he inspired notable figures like Rabindranath Tagore, Kazi Nazrul Islam, and American poet Allen Ginsberg.
  • Between 2018 and 2022, around 5 million large farmland trees disappeared in India because of changes in farming methods. Farmers have cut down mature trees in agroforestry fields and now grow trees in separate block plantations, which are less ecologically valuable. This trend is noticeable in villages in Telangana, Haryana, Maharashtra, and other states.
  • Researchers from the University of Copenhagen and Denmark found that the main reasons for removing trees are their low benefits and the shading they cause. Increased crop yields have also led to more paddy fields, reducing tree areas. Agroforestry is crucial to India’s landscape, providing social and ecological benefits and helping with climate solutions. Researchers used AI-based deep learning models to detect individual non-forest trees each year.
  • Starting on May 25, the Sikkim transport department will introduce an AI-driven traffic management system statewide. This initiative aims to modernize traffic management and enhance regulatory efficiency. The system will automatically check documents and identify violations. According to government notifications, all vehicle owners must ensure their documents are current.
