- Over a decade, imports rose by over 20%, averaging a 7% yearly increase (from 54.3 million tonnes in FY23).
- Russia’s supply hit multi-year highs at 6.4 million tonnes in FY24, a 200% increase from FY23 and a 300% increase over six years (from 2.3 mt in FY23 and 1.6 mt in FY19, respectively).
- India remains one of the world’s leading importers of coking coal, importing between 47 and 54 million tonnes over the past decade.
- Australia maintained its position as the primary coking coal supplier in FY24, accounting for 34.2 million tonnes, or 59%, of total shipments.
- Six years ago, Australia accounted for 18% of coal exports, while Russia and the United States contributed 3% and 8%, respectively.
- Russia has become the third-largest coking coal supplier, surpassing countries like Canada and Mozambique.
- In FY24, India produced 52 million tonnes of sponge iron, a 20% increase from FY23’s 43 million tonnes.
- Crude steel production in India reached 143 million tonnes in the previous fiscal year, marking an almost 14% rise from the preceding year’s 127 million tonnes.
- Nalin Prabhat, currently serving as Additional Director General in CRPF, has been appointed as the Director General of the National Security Guard (NSG), the country’s counter-terrorism force. His appointment is approved until August 31, 2028, which is his retirement date. Previously, Daljit Singh Chawdhary, the chief of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), held an additional charge of NSG. Additionally, the appointment of Sapna Tewari, an Additional Director in the Intelligence Bureau, as Special Director in the agency, has been approved for a two-year tenure or until April 30, 2026, whichever comes first.
- India’s overseas investment dropped by 39% to $28.64 billion in the year ending March 2024, as per RBI data. Outward foreign direct investment (FDI) totaled $46.96 billion in the year ending March 2023. Of the total overseas investment, $9.62 billion was through equity, contributing about 34% of the financial commitment in FY2024. Loan commitments decreased to $5.24 billion from $7.73 billion in FY2024. Indian companies issued overseas guarantees worth $14 billion, down from $20.09 billion in FY2023. The peak outward FDI in FY2024 was observed in March.
- National Civil Service Day is celebrated annually on April 21 to honor the dedicated work of civil servants across departments and organizations, ensuring efficient administrative operations. Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel, post-Independence, coined civil servants as the backbone of India.
