  • Naima Khatoon is now the Vice-Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) for five years, marking her as the first woman to ever hold this role in over a century. President Draupadi Murmu, the University’s Visitor, approved her appointment. Permission from the Election Commission of India (ECI) was also secured due to the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) implementation. She served as principal at the Women’s College starting in 2014. Originally founded in 1875 as Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College, AMU gained its current status under the Aligarh Muslim University Act of 1920. Celebrating its centennial in September 2020, AMU ranks among India’s oldest universities. Historically, there hasn’t been a female Vice-Chancellor at AMU until now. In 1920, Begum Sultan Jahan was appointed as AMU Chancellor, the only woman to ever hold the position.
  • Pavuluri Subba Rao, the Founder, CEO, and Chairman of Ananth Technologies, received the ‘Aryabhatta Award’ from the Aeronautical Society of India (ASI). He was also named a ‘Distinguished Fellow’ of ASI. The award recognizes Rao’s significant contributions to space science in India over his lifetime. In 1992, Rao established Ananth Technologies Limited to develop advanced avionics for ISRO and the Defense sector within India. The company, headquartered in Hyderabad, employs over 1,600 people across three centers located in Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Thiruvananthapuram. Ananth Technologies Limited has supplied critical components and technologies for 98 satellites and 78 launch vehicles for India’s space programs.
  • The World Health Organization (WHO) has approved a new oral cholera vaccine called Euvichol-S. It’s as effective as current vaccines but with a simpler formula, aiding quick production and distribution. Euvichol-S is a streamlined version of Euvichol-Plus, both made by South Korea’s EuBiologics Co., Ltd. WHO’s prequalification list already includes Euvichol and Euvichol-Plus. In 2022, cholera cases doubled to 473,000. EuBiologics is the top supplier of oral cholera vaccines globally. Cholera, caused by Vibrio cholerae bacteria, leads to severe diarrhea.
  • Achyuta Samanta, the founder of KIIT and KISS (Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences), presented the award during the ceremony. N. Chandrasekaran, Chairman of the Tata Group, and Ricky Kej, a three-time Grammy Award winner, also attended.
  • The award for Tata was initially announced in 2021 but was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Ratan Tata, Chairman Emeritus of the Tata Group, is a well-known industrialist and philanthropist.
  • The KISS Humanitarian Award, established in 2008 by Achyuta Samanta, recognizes organizations and individuals for their global humanitarian efforts.
