  • The recent shutdown of Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) has created uncertainty in the job market for Indian startups. These startups had about $1 billion deposited with SVB. The bank was closed by regulators on March 10 because of a rush of withdrawals, even though it had $209 billion in assets by the end of 2022. However, HR and staffing firms remain positive about the Indian economy and think that the SVB situation won’t greatly affect the job market.
  • After President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi’s visit to India as a chief guest for Republic Day celebrations, Egypt joined the BRICS New Development Bank (NDB). Sources say Egypt became an official member on February 20, with formal notification on March 22. Egypt aims to improve its infrastructure, and NDB funding will play a key role in achieving this goal.
  • India and Tanzania can now use their own currencies for trade, as approved by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). This change is expected to lower costs and enhance trade efficiency between the two countries, leading to more trade and stronger economic ties.
  • Ashneer Grover, co-founder of BharatPe, launched a new cricket fantasy app called CrickPe just before the Indian Premier League (IPL) begins. This app competes with others like Dream11, Mobile Premier League (MPL), and Games24x7’s My11Circle. Grover’s company, Third Unicorn Pvt Ltd, raised $4 million in seed funding from over two dozen angel investors, including Anmol Singh Jaggi, Anirudh Kedia, and Vishal Kedia. Grover, previously with BharatPe and Grofers, both unicorns, aims to launch the app during the IPL, allowing users to join contests for IPL matches starting March 31, 2023.
  • The Indian Defence Ministry recently signed two contracts with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) totaling more than Rs 3,700 crore. These contracts aim to boost the operational capabilities of the Indian Air Force. Both contracts fall under the Buy Indian – IDMM (Indigenously Designed Developed and Manufactured) category, aligning with the Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision. The first contract, valued at over Rs 2,800 crore, involves supplying Medium Power Radars (MPR) named ‘Arudhra’, designed and developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and manufactured by BEL. The second contract, costing approximately Rs 950 crore, pertains to Radar Warning Receivers (RWR).
