- Scientists at Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University in Hisar have identified a new and potentially harmful disease affecting pea crops. Dubbed “Witches’ Broom,” it’s caused by the pathogen ‘Candidatus Phytoplasma asteris’ (16SrI). The American Phytopathological Society (APS) in the USA has acknowledged this new plant disease. Their findings have been published in the prestigious journal ‘Plant Disease,’ marking the first research report on the subject. Haryana Agricultural University scientists are the first worldwide to uncover this disease. Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University, established on February 2, 1970, is Asia’s largest publicly funded agricultural university, named after India’s fifth Prime Minister.
- The Indian Olympic Association announced that Sharath Kamal will carry the flag for India at the Paris 2024 Olympics, while MC Mary Kom will lead as the Chef de Mission. Kamal is a top table tennis player with 10 National Championships and 13 CWG medals. Mary Kom is a six-time world boxing champion. Gagan Narang, a bronze medalist from the 2012 London Olympics, will oversee shooting village operations at the Paris Olympics. The event is set to run from July 26 to August 11.
- MV Rao, the managing director and CEO of Central Bank of India, is now the Chairman of the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA). This decision was made by the managing committee of the IBA on March 21. Madhav Nair will serve as the association’s honorary secretary.
