  • The traditional pottery from Manamadurai, Tamil Nadu, has been granted a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, known for its intricate designs and vibrant colors.

In 2022, India ranked fourth globally in military spending, with a nearly six percent increase compared to 2021, as per a report by SIPRI. The total military expenditure reached USD 81.4 billion, marking a 6% increase from 2021 and a 47% increase from 2013.

RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das addressed a financial resilience conference in Mumbai. The conference, themed “Financial Stability: Framework, Monitoring, and Implementation,” is jointly organized by the College of Supervisors and the Centre for Central Banking Studies in London. The RBI initiated the College of Supervisors (CoS) to enhance oversight of regulated firms, with former deputy governor N S Viswanathan serving as its chairman along with five additional members.

Appointment

  • Mohammed Shahabuddin Chuppu became Bangladesh’s 22nd president after taking the oath of office.
  • He succeeded Abdul Hamid, whose term ended on April 23, 2023.
  • Chuppu, a seasoned politician and former judge, was elected as the ruling party’s candidate without opposition in February of this year.
  • Following the ceremony, he signed the necessary paperwork to assume the presidency.
  • Shahabuddin Chuppu, born in 1949 in the Pabna District of northwest Bangladesh, previously served as one of the commissioners of the independent Anti-Corruption Commission.

Awards

A Munduruku Indigenous woman named Alessandra Korap from the Brazilian Amazon received the 2023 Goldman Environmental Prize. This prize honors grassroots environmental activists from around the world. Established in 1989, the Goldman Prize recognizes individuals who lead local initiatives for positive change through community involvement. Korap, belonging to the Munduruku people of the Amazon rainforest, witnessed encroachment by cities, farms, and roads in the 1980s, posing threats to her community of 14,000 along the Tapajos River from settlers, miners, and loggers.

Science

  • The Cabinet approved the National Quantum Mission (NQM) with a budget of 6003 crores.
  • This mission, spanning from 2023 to 2031, aims to boost India’s quantum technology sector and elevate its global standing.
  • The goal is to develop intermediate-scale quantum computers with 50 to 1000 physical qubits across various platforms in 8 years.

Sport

Shaheen Afridi, aged 23 years and 18 days, became the youngest bowler to achieve 200 T20 wickets. He reached this milestone during the fifth T20I match between Pakistan and New Zealand. Doing so in just 143 games, he surpassed the previous record set by Kagiso Rabada, who achieved it at 25 years and 157 days. Afridi is the 53rd bowler overall and the 8th from Pakistan to reach 200 wickets in T20 cricket.
