  • He’s known for his contributions to space missions, ultraviolet astronomy, and studying the interstellar medium. Initially labeled as 2005 EX296, the asteroid has been renamed (215884) Jayantimurthy, as announced by the Working Group of the International Astronomical Union (IAU), responsible for naming small Solar System objects. Discovered in 2005 by MW Buie at Kitt Peak National Observatory in Arizona, United States, the asteroid completes an orbit around the Sun between Mars and Jupiter every 3.3 years. Professor Murthy retired from the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) in 2021 and now serves as an Honorary Professor. He also acted as the director of IIA from July 2018 to October 2019.
  • Hurun Research’s 2024 Global Rich List reveals that Mumbai has become Asia’s top city for billionaires, surpassing Beijing for the first time. Mumbai now boasts 92 billionaires, outnumbering Beijing’s 91, although China still leads with 814 billionaires compared to India’s 271. Globally, Mumbai ranks third in billionaire count, with New York at the top with 119 billionaires, followed by London with 97. Mumbai’s rise is credited to the addition of 26 new billionaires in the past year, bringing its total billionaire wealth to $445 billion, a 47% increase from the previous year. In contrast, Beijing’s billionaire wealth has declined by 28%, totaling $265 billion. Mumbai’s wealth surge is fueled by sectors like energy and pharmaceuticals, with prominent figures like Mukesh Ambani leading the way. Notably, real estate mogul Mangal Prabhat Lodha and his family saw their wealth increase by 116%.
  • This is a firm requirement for sustainable development, aimed at fulfilling the country’s international commitments to promote renewable energy sources.
  • A bench, including Manoj Mishra, JB Pardiwala, and Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, ruled on a matter concerning the protection of the Great Indian Bustard (GIB).

  • On March 25, ISRO announced a significant achievement: the PSLV Orbital Experimental Module-3 (POEM-3) completed its mission by re-entering the Earth’s atmosphere. This milestone occurred on March 21, 2024, during the PSLV-C58/XPoSat mission, which left minimal debris in orbit. The PSLV-C58 mission concluded on January 1, 2024. Following the primary mission of deploying satellites into their designated orbits, the PSLV’s final stage transitioned to a stable platform, POEM-3. This stage was lowered from 650 km to 350 km, expediting its re-entry and decommissioning to minimize the risk of accidental break-up. POEM-3, equipped with 9 experimental payloads, including 6 delivered by NGEs via IN-SPACe, aimed to demonstrate technology and conduct scientific experiments on newly developed indigenous systems.
