  • The Gems and Jewelry Sector, represented by the Gems and Jewelry Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), has gained Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) status from the Centre.
  • Introduced in 2011 by the Customs Department, the AEO program was initially a pilot project aimed at improving the business environment. It has significantly streamlined export processes, leading to notable time and cost savings for exporters.
  • Aligned with the standards of the World Customs Organization (WCO), the AEO program seeks to secure and facilitate global trade. Its objective is to bolster supply chain security and ease the movement of legitimate goods.
  • Entities involved in international trade can qualify for AEO status by meeting Customs’ supply chain security standards. In return, they receive certain benefits.
  • India’s AEO program aligns with its commitments under Article 7.7 of the WTO TFA.
  • Among the 20 companies that applied for AEO status, Asian Star, a manufacturer of diamonds and diamond jewelry, became the first in the Indian gems and jewelry industry to be granted AEO certification.
  • Yuvraj, known for his iconic six sixes in an over during India’s victorious Men’s T20 World Cup 2007, is named one of the first ambassadors for the upcoming tournament. He joins Chris Gayle and Usain Bolt as ambassadors. Yuvraj will take part in promotional events leading up to and during the T20 World Cup in the USA. Notably, he’ll be involved in the India vs Pakistan match in New York on June 9. The tournament, co-hosted by the USA and West Indies, runs from June 1-29, featuring 55 matches across nine venues, with the final in Barbados on June 29.
  • India and Oman are set to sign a trade agreement soon, enhancing India’s relations with West Asian nations. Their current annual trade stands at under $13 billion. Oman’s strategic location at the Strait of Hormuz, a key passage for global oil trade between Oman and Iran, underscores its significance. India aims to forge bilateral agreements with Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) members like Oman and the UAE. Oman has agreed to waive duties on Indian exports, covering various sectors like agriculture, gems, jewelry, leather, and automobiles. In return, India will lower duties on certain petrochemicals, including aluminum and copper from Oman. This trade pact with Oman will offer India a competitive advantage, especially as the GCC explores trade deals with Pakistan and China.
