  • The Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) wants legal action against Pakistan for renaming and cultivating protected Basmati varieties from India.
  • Pakistan is growing and selling varieties like Pusa-1121 and 1509 basmati as “1121 Kainat” and “Kissan Basmati.”
  • The unauthorized cultivation and sales began with Pusa Basmati-1121 (PB-1121), known for its longer grain length.
  • In Pakistan, PB-1121 is officially registered as ‘PK 1121 Aromatic.’
  • PB-1509, another high-yielding basmati, is renamed as ‘Kissan Basmati’ in Pakistan.
  • Improved versions like PB-1847, PB-1885, and PB-1886 are derived from PB-1509, PB-1121, and PB-6 respectively.
  • These basmati rice varieties are protected by the Seeds Act, 1966, and can only be grown in India.
    They are also safeguarded by the Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights Act, 2001.
  • Scientists named a new deep-sea isopod species after the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). The species is called Brucethoa ISRO to honor ISRO’s successful space missions. Discovered by P. T. Aneesh, an Assistant Professor at the Seto Inland Sea Carbon Neutral Research Centre, this tiny crustacean lives in the gill cavity of the Spinyjaw greeneye fish. The Spinyjaw greeneye is found at depths of 250-450 meters off the coast of Kerala. Brucethoa ISRO is the second species of its genus documented in India.
  • The landing site for Chandrayaan-3 has been named ‘Shiv Shakti’ and has been approved by the International Astronomical Union (IAU). The name represents strength and welfare for humanity.
  • ‘Shiv Shakti’ symbolizes unity from the Himalayas to Kanyakumari.
  • Chandrayaan-3, launched on July 14, 2023, successfully landed on the Moon’s South Pole on August 23, 2023.
  • On March 26, 2023, PM Modi declared that the site of Chandrayaan-3’s Moon landing would be called ‘Shiv Shakti’.
  • The spot where Chandrayaan-2’s landing failed will be named “Tiranga Point”.
  • The day Vikram Lander touched down on the moon’s surface will be celebrated as “National Space Day”.
  • From December 14, 2023, to March 23, 2024, the Indian Navy led maritime security operations known as ‘Op Sankalp’. They were the primary responders and preferred security partners in the Indian Ocean Region, focusing on the Gulf of Aden, Arabian Sea, and off the East Coast of Somalia. About 5000 personnel were deployed for over 450 ship days. During this time, naval ships, aircraft, and Special Forces conducted operations to safeguard the seas and protect against various non-traditional threats. The Indian Ocean Region saw increased presence of warships from both regional and extra-regional navies.
