  • The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) plans to start a thorough review and analysis of existing research. This will help guide medical practices, particularly in managing lung cancer. They’ve invited researchers to express their interest in conducting these reviews. Currently, there aren’t established guidelines for preventing, screening, diagnosing, treating, or providing palliative care for lung cancer in India. Prospective applicants will use the GRADE tool for their systematic reviews and meta-analyses. Lung cancer is a major health issue in India, responsible for 10% of all cancer-related deaths. Smoking tobacco is the primary cause of lung cancer.
  • A new database is created to document crimes against UN peacekeepers and track efforts to punish those responsible. The database launch was announced during a meeting of the India-led ‘Group of Friends’ (GOF). It will serve as an online resource for UN missions, aiding member countries in monitoring and addressing attacks on peacekeepers. India sponsored the database, which is hosted on the Unite Aware platform. The ‘Group of Friends’ (GOF) was established in 2022 to promote accountability for crimes against peacekeepers, with India, Bangladesh, Egypt, France, Morocco, and Nepal as co-chairs and 40 member nations.
  • ISRO will launch START-2024 to raise awareness about space science and technology. Expressions of Interest for the program have been invited from educational institutions in India. The program will run from April to May 2024 and is designed for undergraduate and postgraduate students. Those eligible include final-year undergraduate and postgraduate students majoring in physical sciences (Physics and Chemistry) and technology. Educational institutions interested in joining this ISRO initiative must apply by April 2, 2024. The training will take place online through the ISRO E-CLASS platform.
  • Thailand’s parliament approved a bill allowing same-sex marriage. The bill will update the Civil and Commercial Code by using gender-neutral terms like “spouses” and “individuals” instead of “husband and wife.” It passed with 400 out of 415 members in favor and 10 against in the House of Representatives. Now, it needs approval from the upper house. In December 2023, Thai lawmakers approved four draft bills on same-sex marriage. Taiwan was the first Asian country to legalize same-sex marriage in 2019, and Nepal followed suit in November 2023, becoming the first South Asian nation to recognize and register a same-sex marriage.
