Some lines of current affairs 30 March 2024 news

  • IRDAI has kept LIC, GIC Re, and New India Assurance as crucial insurers for 2023–24. LIC and New India are the biggest in life and general insurance respectively, while GIC Re is the only Indian reinsurer. If these insurers fail, it could disrupt the local financial system, affecting the availability of insurance services for the national economy. They receive extra regulatory attention to handle risks and moral issues, being considered ‘too big or important to fail’ due to their size, market significance, and connections.
  • The 2024 Food Waste Index Report was released just before the International Day of Zero Waste (March 30). It revealed that in 2022, globally, over one billion meals were wasted daily, totaling 1.05 billion tonnes of food waste. Sixty percent of this waste happened at the household level. Around 783 million people experienced hunger, with about a third facing food insecurity worldwide. Many low to middle-income countries lack proper systems to monitor progress towards the Sustainable Development Goal of cutting food waste by half by 2030. Only Australia, Japan, the U.K., the U.S., and the European Union have such tracking systems. The report found that household food waste levels varied by only 7 kg per person among high-income, upper-middle, and lower-middle-income countries, with hotter countries generating more waste per person. Food loss and waste contributed 8-10% of global greenhouse gas emissions annually. As of 2022, only 21 countries had incorporated food waste reduction into their climate plans or Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). “Food waste” refers to food and associated inedible parts removed from the human food supply chain. The Food Waste Index monitors food and inedible parts wasted at retail and consumer levels (households and food service) globally and nationally.
  • Nidhu Saxena is now the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (MD & CEO) of Bank of Maharashtra, starting March 27, 2024, for a three-year term. He replaces AS Rajeev, who is moving to become a Vigilance Commissioner in CVC. With 26 years in banking, beginning at Bank of Baroda, and another 8 years in the corporate sector, Saxena brings extensive experience to his new role.
  • The French lower house of Parliament passed a bill to prohibit discrimination based on hair texture, length, color, or style. This bill will modify existing anti-discrimination laws in the labor code, particularly supporting black individuals who often face workplace discrimination due to their hair. Olivier Serva, a Black MP from Guadeloupe, drafted the bill, which received approval from 44 legislators, with only two opposing votes. Once approved by the Senate, it will become law. In the United States, 23 states have already enacted similar legislation to protect against hair discrimination in workplaces and public schools. France’s action will make it the first country globally to officially recognize hair-based discrimination at a national level.
