- India has launched its inaugural quantum computing-powered telecom network link between Sanchar Bhawan and the National Informatics Centre office in New Delhi. Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has offered a reward of Rs 10 lakh to ethical hackers capable of breaking the system’s encryption. Additionally, a hackathon challenge has been initiated for individuals to attempt breaking the C-DoT developed system, with a reward of Rs 10 lakh per successful breach.
- During the 2023 International Zero Waste Day in New Delhi, Minister Hardeep S. Puri announced a goal for 1000 cities to achieve a 3-Star Garbage Free rating by October 2024. The GFC-Star rating system, launched in January 2018, aims to spur competition among urban local bodies (ULBs) and has seen increased certification uptake. The Minister praised the ‘Swachhta Doots’ nationwide, highlighting their role as change-makers and community leaders who turn challenges into livelihood opportunities.
- Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the President of the UAE, has named his brother, Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, as the Vice President of the country. This decision was approved by the UAE Federal Supreme Council. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the current Vice President, will remain in his role. Furthermore, Sheikh Mohamed, who also serves as the Ruler of Abu Dhabi, has appointed Sheikh Tahnoun bin Zayed and Sheikh Hazza bin Zayed as Deputy Rulers of Abu Dhabi.
- The World Bank has given Karnataka, India, a $363 million loan to provide clean drinking water to two million rural households. The goal is to install piped water connections in homes across the state, along with building a distribution network and putting in water meters. This project will benefit about 10 million people in all 31 districts of Karnataka. It’s part of the Karnataka Sustainable Rural Water Supply Program, aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of rural water services.
