In the world of Formula 1, even the smallest infractions can have significant consequences. This was evident during the first practice session (FP1) of the Belgian Grand Prix at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, where Red Bull Racing drivers Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez were fined for a minor yet notable breach of the pit lane speed limit.
Both Verstappen and Perez were found to have exceeded the pit lane speed limit of 80 km/h by a mere 0.1 km/h. This slight overshoot resulted in a total penalty of €200, with each driver incurring a fine of €100. The infractions were in direct violation of Article 34.7 of the Formula 1 sporting regulations, which mandates automatic fines for such breaches, regardless of their magnitude.
The fines were imposed by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA). Despite this minor financial setback, Max Verstappen had an otherwise outstanding session. He dominated the timing sheets, clocking the fastest lap time of 1:44.372 on soft tires, and led his closest rival, McLaren’s Oscar Piastri, by over half a second.
However, the session wasn’t without further repercussions for Red Bull Racing. Verstappen faces a grid penalty in the upcoming race on Sunday. He will be demoted by 10 places due to exceeding the permitted number of power unit parts, specifically for taking his fifth internal combustion engine (ICE) of the season. Additionally, Yuki Tsunoda, another driver associated with Red Bull, will start from the back of the grid for similar power unit replacements.
Daniel Ricciardo, another notable name in the F1 paddock, was also fined for a similar pit lane speed limit violation during FP1.
Despite these setbacks, Red Bull Racing remains optimistic about their performance in the upcoming race. Verstappen’s impressive pace during the practice session is a promising indicator of the team’s potential, and fans are eagerly awaiting to see how the grid penalties will impact the race dynamics.
