Amarnath Yatra 2024: Registration, Routes, and Safety Measures

Great news for those eager to visit Baba Barfani! If you’re planning the Amarnath Yatra, listen up. Registration starts today, April 15th, for the journey commencing on June 29th. Legend has it that in the sacred Amarnath cave, Lord Shiva recounted the tale of immortality to Mother Parvati.

The Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) announced that the annual pilgrimage to the Amarnath temple will run from June 29 to August 19. Advance registration for this 52-day pilgrimage begins today, April 15. The pilgrimage occurs via two routes: the traditional 48 km Nunwan-Pahalgam route in Anantnag district, and the 14 km Baltal route in Ganderbal district.

Every year, thousands of devotees travel from all over the country to see Baba Barfani in the holy Amarnath cave, which is located 141 km away from Srinagar and sits at an altitude of 12,756 feet. During the Shravani fair in July–August, devotees visit the sacred cave to worship Baba Barfani. This is the only time in the year when the cave is accessible. The annual ‘Amarnath Yatra’ begins with ‘Pratham Pujan’.

Security for the Amarnath Yatra is strict, with preparations already underway. Many security personnel will be stationed along the route to handle any emergencies like bad weather or natural disasters. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are training to join the Mountain Rescue Teams (MRT) of Jammu and Kashmir Police to ensure the safety of pilgrims.
