2024 Indian General Elections: Initial Voting Phase and Circulated Opinion Poll Controversy
The initial voting phase starts on April 19, 2024, covering 102 constituencies in 21 states and union territories. Meanwhile, a screenshot of an opinion poll conducted by Axis My India has circulated widely, suggesting that the Congress party might lead in the 2024 elections.
According to a Facebook post, the poll indicates the following: “🚨🚨AXIS MY INDIA CONFIDENTIAL LOKSABHA OPINION POLL LEAKED!! BJP — 208 seats (37%) INC — 123 seats (26%) NDA — 243 (44%) INDIA – 242 (43%) It appears that the BJP may suffer in the 45-day-long elections and secure fewer than 180 seats. The competition is fierce, and India is making its move🔥🇮🇳.”
FACT CHECK
We started by searching for keywords but didn’t find any media reports supporting the viral claim. Digging deeper, we used a Reverse Image Search, which directed us to an April 18, 2024, post by Axis My India, debunking the viral claim.
The press release clarifies that certain opinion polls related to the 2024 Indian General Elections, attributed to Mr. Pradeep Gupta and Axis My India, are false. Axis My India does not conduct or publish pre-poll/opinion polls. They will release exit polls only after the elections, as per ECI guidelines, on June 1 at 6:30 pm. The Chairman & Managing Director, Pradeep Gupta, also shared this press release on Twitter on April 18, 2024, denying the claims. Therefore, we can confidently state that the viral opinion poll by Axis My India is fake.
