Ranji Trophy 2023-24 Elite Group Semifinals Set to Kick Off: Vidarbha vs Madhya Pradesh, Mumbai vs Tamil Nadu

The semi-final matches of the Ranji Trophy 2024 Elite Group start this Saturday (March 2). In this 89th season, the first semi-final will feature Vidarbha against Madhya Pradesh, while the second semi-final will see Mumbai taking on Tamil Nadu. Vidarbha, two-time champions, have won three out of four matches at the VCA Stadium this season, losing only to Saurashtra. Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh, the 2022 champions, won three out of eight league matches.
Tamil Nadu is playing against Mumbai, who has won the Ranji Trophy 41 times. Vidarbha beat Karnataka by 127 runs in the quarter-finals, thanks to Atharva Tayde’s century, and advanced to the semi-finals. Madhya Pradesh almost lost to Andhra in the quarter-finals but managed to win by four runs and secure a spot in the semi-finals.
Mumbai has the most Ranji Trophy titles, 41 in total. They reached the semi-finals by taking the lead in the first innings against Baroda. Tamil Nadu defeated Saurashtra by an innings and 33 runs in the quarter-finals.
Vidartha and strength of Madhya Pradesh
Venkatesh Iyer has been the star player for Madhya Pradesh, scoring 528 runs. Himanshu Mantri and Yash Dubey also made significant contributions, with 513 and 510 runs respectively. Despite Rajat Patidar’s absence due to his commitment to the Indian Test team, Madhya Pradesh didn’t falter. Vidarbha’s batting has been strong, with Karun Nair, Dhruv Shorey, Atharva Tayde, and captain Akshay Wadkar all performing well.
In Tamil Nadu, R Cy Kishore and S Ajit Ram have been standout bowlers, taking 47 and 41 wickets respectively. Mumbai’s batting has been solid overall, except for captain Ajinkya Rahane, who has struggled, managing only one half-century in six matches.
